Word by Word
In the ongoing series Word by Word (continuation of Step by Step), Vegas Šimbelis explores language as it appears on asphalt / pavement - painted words and letters that lose stability when photographed in motion. Designed to instruct or direct, these markings fracture through perspective, movement, and digital distortion, shifting from readable text to visual fragments.
Through glitches and misalignments, photography reveals language as unstable and contingent. Words slip out of order, meaning becomes deferred, and reading turns into looking. Rather than clarifying what is written, the image exposes the limits of visual and linguistic control, presenting language as something co-produced by movement, technology, and perception.
From this perspective, Word by Word becomes a reflection on contemporary visual literacy, where words are no longer fixed but unstable surfaces, and photography exposes the gap between instruction and perception, between what is written and what can be understood.
